The revised edition of Playing The Bass Guitar combines the formidable bass talents of Earth, Wind & Fire co-founder and bassist Verdine White, and the late, great EWF trombonist and session trombonist/bassist Louis Satterfield. Mr. Satterfield was Verdine’s bass instructor and the book is dedicated to his memory.

This is a great book for the music student who is hoping to develop the strong, functional and absolutely necessary bass playing skills that can potentially lead to a long and healthy life as a contributing bassist. The foreword by Karl Kaminski states, “I hope you enjoy the book, and with the knowledge you gain, you’ll come to know Verdine’s freedom and spirit.” Truth.

This book works the rudiments and foundation of playing the bass guitar with intentional forward motion and attention to detail that many books overlook. I enjoyed every lesson, and I used it for several weeks to drill fundamental technique and reading concepts with several of my students – directing a few to purchase the book for their personal library.

Playing The Bass Guitar is laid out with a lot of loving care and every page is easy to follow throughout. The photos of Verdine are also very cool (the man has great style), and the 2-CDs included in the package present good tone and are well produced. This is one of the books I highly recommend to anyone starting out on the instrument – or, if you’re just wanting to begin reading bass clef to bolster your availability in today’s competitive musician’s marketplace! TAB is included… But, the notation examples are well written and easy to follow. This is a workbook for the 21st Century beginning bassist.
